Why The Houston Rockets Do The Deal

There’s no denying that there is some risk for the Rockets with this deal.

If rumors are to be trusted, Reddish is looking for a more significant role. On a Rockets team that’s still establishing its offensive hierarchy, that could be an issue.

Obviously, this team will be prioritizing touches for Jalen Green, but he’s far from the only young player who’ll need opportunities here. Alperen Sengun has tremendous potential that this team needs to explore. Furthermore, they’re likely looking to make a decision on Kevin Porter Jr. as their starting point guard of the future this year.

Finally, Jabari Smith Jr. is likely to primarily play off-ball, but as a recent number 3 pick, he will need touches. Is there room for Reddish here?

Counterpoint: does it matter? The Rockets don’t care to win games in 2022-23 – they’re looking to maximize their lottery odds. If there are too many cooks in the kitchen, they’ll live with a poorly cooked meal.

If Reddish breaks out, they’re acquiring a young star at the cost of a player who’s already issued a trade request in Martin and a veteran who isn’t part of their future.

On the other hand, if he doesn’t, they’ll bury him in the rotation to maximize the touches their young core receives. Neither potential outcome is worth worrying about for the rebuilding Rockets.
