Both of Hollywood’s teams may be coming up short, but neither of their shortcomings is hard to account for. 

The Lakers entirely disregarded roster construction when they acquired Russell Westbrook. Why would a team featuring LeBron James, one of the best on-ball playmakers in NBA history, acquire a player who needs the ball – and can’t shoot? 

The Clippers’ woes are slightly more outside of their control. Kawhi Leonard has long struggled to stay healthy, and 2022-23 has been no exception.

Without their best player, the Clippers go from “world-beater” to “playoff hopeful.”

If he can get right, the Clippers should get right back to title contention. Meanwhile, the Lakers can’t rely on luck. If they’re going to contend this season, they need to proactively make changes.
