Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal 

Indeed, a lead ball-handler who won’t shoot is problematic. How about a secondary ball-handler? 

After all, that’s the role the Mavericks would have for Simmons. Obviously, Luka Doncic will remain their primary offensive option. Could Simmons thrive in Dallas? 

For what it’s worth, they may be built to maximize him. Specifically, the Mavericks have a stretch big man in Christian Wood. His ability to space the floor from the five spot would offset Simmons’ non-shooting. 

Of course, the Mavericks have been deploying Wood as a sixth man this year. This deal probably moves him into the starting lineup. That’s fine.
