Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Lately, it’s looked like the Lakers may be making some progress – even if it’s incremental.
Westbrook has looked better as a sixth man. Realistically, that should be his role moving forward. With that in mind, the Lakers could stand to upgrade the backcourt starter alongside Patrick Beverley.
Trent Jr. could be that guy. Suddenly, the Lakers would have two 3-and-D players in their backcourt. That should maximize LeBron James’ elite playmaking ability. With the addition of Trent Jr., the Lakers may have the most functional roster they’ve had since they won the 2019-20 title.
Just as importantly, they don’t have to give up an unprotected pick in the process of building it. That may not matter now, but in 2027, the Lakers may be happy to have some draft capital.

After all, they’ve already given two lottery picks to the New Orleans Pelicans. This deal has the Lakers learning from that mistake.
