It’s almost hard to justify landing Kevin Durant – or, more accurately, it’s too easy.
The Raptors do this deal to have Kevin Durant on their roster. Put differently, they do it to join the ranks of the NBA’s contenders. After all, there’s no questioning whether that would happen or not.
In fact, we already know Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet are credible second and third options on a championship team. After all, the Raptors won a championship with them in those roles.
Meanwhile, the Raptors now have Scottie Barnes in addition to those two veterans.

All told, a frontcourt of Barnes, Siakam, and Durant may have the most length in the NBA. They may also have the most skill in the NBA. In fact, they may be the best frontcourt for the best team in the NBA. That’s why the Raptors do this deal.
