Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal 

For the Nets, the question isn’t simply “why should they do this deal”? The question is “what should the Nets do”?

This team is in a bind. They owe most of their draft capital to the Houston Rockets through to 2027. Meanwhile, they’re 1-5 and seemingly hounded by widespread dysfunction. 

Trading Irving may only be the first step. After all, Durant requested a trade this summer. If the Nets don’t right this ship, he could request a trade again. 

At the same time, the Nets could see if there’s some addition-by-subtraction at play here. By moving Irving, they could carve out a better role for Ben Simmons as a ball-handler.

At the same time, if this doesn’t work out, they could move Durant for a monster return and start a rebuild. Hopefully, they assemble a more functional team this time around.
