With this deal, the Heat are capitalizing on a buy-low opportunity. 

As it stands, Irving is surely a distressed asset. Given his occasionally toxic behavior, it’s hard to imagine an NBA team taking a chance on him. At the same time, it could behoove the Heat to capitalize on the opportunity to do exactly that. 

After all, we can criticize Irving all day. The reality is that he’s one of the most talented basketball players in the world. As long as he’s willing to suit up, he should make any team he’s on better. 

That includes the Miami Heat. In fact, it’s hard to overstate the extent to which he’d be an upgrade over Lowry.
