Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Some Nets fans will not like this deal. To be sure, it has them selling low on Simmons.
That may be a necessary measure. At 1-5, something clearly isn’t working here. It may be Simmons. For what it’s worth, he is a notoriously difficult player to fit into a team concept.
By contrast, Poeltl and McDermott are both plug-and-play guys. Poeltl would give the Nets a new starting big man, and one of the best rim protectors in the NBA to boot.
Frankly, he’s the most valuable addition the Nets are making here, but don’t sell McDermott short – he’s one of the best floor spacers in the league.

All told, the Nets would be hoping this trade was a case of addition by subtraction. They’re moving an extremely talented, but complicated player for two pieces that are easy to fit into their structure.
They could give themselves an opportunity to maximize their potential in the process.
