Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal 

For what it’s worth, the last time Irving was reliable for an NBA team, he was playing with LeBron James. 

Perhaps James can continue to get the most out of his understudy. Either way, from a certain perspective, the Lakers are trading one risk for another. The only question is whether this deal makes them better assuming that both players are available. 

That’s up for debate. On the other hand, the Lakers could still make this deal and still trade Westbrook.

After all, they’d have their new starting point guard. In that scenario, the Lakers could make real improvements to this roster.

After all, trading Davis for Irving is one thing. Trading Davis and Westbrook for, say, Irving, Myles Turner, and Buddy Hield is another. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Lakers don’t look vastly better following that series of moves.
