Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
For the Heat, this deal has nothing to do with 2022-23.
It’s also a trade they probably shouldn’t make right away. As it stands, the Heat are 2-4. That’s a disappointing start, but it’s one they can easily overcome.
On the other hand, they may not. Kyle Lowry is not going to get any better. The Heat may be short the firepower they need to contend if he can’t fill the role they envisioned for him. In that event, they might do well to regroup.
In other words, this deal is about the future for Miami. It gets them off of two burdensome contracts in Robinson and Lowry in exchange for an expiring one. Finally, adding some draft capital is huge for a team that’s otherwise low on it.

Overall, this is a step backward in hopes of taking two steps forward for the Heat. Sometimes, all you can do is cut costs.
