Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

On Saturday, the Spurs upset the Philadelphia 76ers. It was a spirited performance that saw this miscast group of young players and role players rally to take an unexpected victory. That’s a problem.

After all, the Spurs can’t afford too many of those unexpected wins: Not if they’re hoping to draft Victor Wembanyama, anyway. 

For San Antonio, this deal is mostly about tanking the 2022-23 season. After all, they’re sending out their 3 most useful veterans in this deal.

On the other hand, that’s not their only incentive for making this move.

They also, obviously, are landing two highly valuable assets. With the Lakers floundering, who knows where they’ll be by 2027, let alone 2029? For a rebuilding organization, these types of future-focused assets are invaluable.
