Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal

Frankly, the Bulls are in a weird place. The fact that Zach LaVine is starting the 2022-23 season by missing a few games due to his knee adds complexity to the situation.

They should be competitive in 2022-23, but they’re unlikely to compete for a title. They’ve got some intriguing young players, but they’re not generally young. Unfortunately, the Bulls may be in a place some consider to be the worst in the NBA – the middle of the pack.

With that in mind, the Bulls can’t trade LaVine until January 15th, having extended him. That’s a moot point – they should wait at least that long anyway. If this team is surpassing expectations, the Bulls should keep them together.

On the other hand, if they get off to a slow start, rebuilding could be an appropriate decision. Granted, it won’t be an easy one to make – the Bulls just assembled this win-now core.

Still, they shouldn’t concern themselves with sunk costs. Between Patrick Williams, Lonzo Ball, Ayo Dosminu, and others, they’ll have a solid start to their rebuild already – with three new first-round picks and a swap, that is.

Finally, bringing Rose back to his hometown squad should at least inspire some feelings of goodwill. Should Knicks fans be feeling good if the team acquires LaVine?
