Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Realistically, much of this deal comes down to Powell’s expendability for the Mavericks.
After all, they acquired two big men this summer. Christian Wood will likely spend the bulk of his time at the 4 in Dallas, but they’ll still want to run him at the 5 for spells to maximize their spacing. Meanwhile, JaVale McGee plays the 5 exclusively. Factor in Maxi Kleber and Powell is buried in this rotation.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks could use a wing. If he offers a little secondary playmaking, that’s all the better – they’re extremely light on creation behind Luka Doncic.
Granted, this isn’t the blockbuster deal that gets Doncic his co-star. Still, the Mavericks will find a good use for Richardson. Unlike the Spurs, they’ll be looking to advance as far into the playoffs as they can in 2022-23.
