Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal
Realistically, this deal is about losing games for the Pacers.
After all, this team is far closer to the bottom of the league than the top. With that in mind, it would be reasonable for them to “tank” in 2022-23. If they intend on doing so, this would be a good start.
In all likelihood, they’d view this deal as Melton, Thybulle, Korkmaz and a lottery-protected pick in exchange for Hield. Sure, Thybulle’s offensive limitations were a problem for the contending Sixers, but the Pacers could afford to be patient and hope that the 25-year-old’s jump shot comes around.
Meanwhile, Korkmaz is a solid utility player at 24. He’s a decent floor spacer and a passable defender.

Still, Melton is the best player they’re getting in return here. He’s a talented offensive player who still holds upside at 24.
With the addition of a pick, even if protected, this should be a no-brainer for the Pacers.
