Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal 

On the other hand, if you’re a Knicks fan and you’d like to see the team tank, we don’t blame you. The prospects in the upcoming draft are too tempting for them to not at least consider it. 

With that said, this deal shouldn’t move the needle too far in direction. Yes, Richardson is a win-now upgrade over Fournier, and yes, that matters to the Knicks. If they want to be an appealing landing spot for a disgruntled star, putting a good team together can help them be exactly that. 

Still, this has more to do with Richardson’s expiring contract than anything else. Fournier, as it stands, may have the worst deal on New York.

It runs for three more seasons, and it exceeds his on-court production. Flipping him for a better on a better deal makes sense for the present and the future.

In other words, this deal gives the Knicks some flexibility. It allows them to potentially improve in 2022-23, which should help attract top-tier talent, but also helps their financial flexibility moving forward.
