Having said all of that – building a contending NBA team is hard. You don’t have to tell either the Portland Trail Blazers or Washington Wizards that. 

Ironically, both of these teams tried to do so with an elite backcourt. For a long time, the Blazers were built around Lillard and C.J. McCollum.

Offensively, the pair were dynamite – but as two small guards, they struggled to contain opponents. 

Meanwhile, the Washington Wizards structured their attack around Beal and John Wall. There were no structural limitations with that pairing – Wall simply got injured.

Now, both of these teams look like relics of those bygone eras. At the same time, the Blazers have made an effort to rebuild a new contending squad around Lillard.
