Every NBA team needs a core. Whether they’re building towards the future, or focused on the present, they need a handful of guys that they wouldn’t trade – barring an offer they couldn’t refuse. 

Ideally, that core consists of a superstar, a co-star, and some elite role players. Every player can’t be the focal point of an offense – some players need to support the focal point. They can still be valuable enough to be considered part of a core. 

The Dallas Mavericks have got the first part of the equation down. Luka Doncic is an undeniable superstar. In fact, he may be the best offensive player in the NBA. Do they really have a core? 

Looking at this roster, it’s hard to make the claim. The Mavericks are a collection of disparate veterans.
