Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
For the Hornets, there are some ulterior motives at play here.
Specifically, they’re clearing Rozier’s long-term contract off the books. For a team that looks relatively directionless, that’s a benefit. Russell’s contract is expiring – if he doesn’t work out with them, they get a clean slate.
Of course, that raises a question – will he work out with them? It’s hard to say. It is fair to say that he’s not the most natural fit. After all, LaMelo Ball is one of the most dynamic on-ball playmakers in the NBA. Why pair him with a lesser version of himself?
Well, Ball is a surprisingly good three-point shooter as well. Granted, he’s more inclined to shoot off the dribble than off the catch, but his strong percentage should be taken as an indication that he can shoot.

Moreover, the Hornets could look to acquire a more conventional off-guard if this isn’t working out, and relegate Russell to sixth-man duties.
After all, a second unit needs a point guard too – no matter which type they’re getting.
