Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
Firstly, this deal is about moving on from Lowry as much as it is anything else. The 36-year-old had a dreadful 2021-22 postseason. At that age, it’s hard to say that he’ll return to his previous form confidently.
On the other hand, D’Angelo Russell didn’t perform so well in these most recent playoffs either. In fact, that’s precisely why he could be available. Is he the right fit for Miami?
Time would tell. Still, as a much younger player, it’s safe to say that he projects as having a better season than Lowry in 2022-23. Russell should be able to find his in Miami’s offense.
It’s not difficult to envision him in pick-and-roll sets with Bam Adebayo, and with Adebayo’s short-roll playmaking abilities, those sets would be quite unpredictable.

Still, that’s not the only appeal Russell may have for the Heat. He’s also on an expiring contract – by contrast, Lowry’s deal runs for three more years. If this doesn’t work out, it at least affords the Heat more flexibility heading into free agency than they’d otherwise have.
