With that in mind, Trae Young isn’t the superstar with some functional limitations. The Miami Heat roster two such players. 

Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo don’t suffer on defense. In fact, they’re two of the league’s best players on that end of the floor. On the other hand, Butler is an unreliable three-point shooter, and Adebayo doesn’t shoot at all. For that reason, surrounding them with spacing is essential. 

Realistically, that’s probably why the Heat acquired Duncan Robinson. He doesn’t do much on an NBA court, but he can certainly shoot the lights out.

Unfortunately, his defense proved so problematic in the 2021-22 playoffs that the Heat took him out of the rotation.

Of course, that raises its own question: if Robinson is such a weak defender, he is really a viable pairing with Young? If the Hawks are aiming to put defensive players around Young, can they really afford to absorb his contract?
