It’s hard to say. Throughout NBA history, the twin towers model has seen a degree of success. We first saw it on the Houston Rockets. Between Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon, they had two elite big men in their starting lineup. Unfortunately, Sampson’s career was cut short by injuries.
On the other hand, the San Antonio Spurs found great success with the model. They won two championships featuring a frontcourt tandem of Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
In fact, they liked Duncan at the 4 so much that after Robinson retired, they routinely paired him with another big – winning 3 more titles in the process.

Yet, the modern game has moved away from such formations. In 2022, the 4 is widely reserved for bigger wings. Last season, the Cavaliers bucked that trend with their Allen/Mobley frontcourt.
