Why The Indiana Pacers Do The Deal 

There are at least two possible outcomes for the Pacers with this deal. Either of them would be fine. 

The first would be Isaac getting his body right and realizing his potential. In all likelihood, that would be their preferred outcome. After all, his ceiling remains absurdly high. 

When healthy, Isaac has looked like a special defensive player. His rare combination of length and lateral mobility allows him to guard the interior and the perimeter at an elite level.

If he ever gets his career back on track, it wouldn’t be fair to ask whether he can win a Defensive Player of the Year award – it makes more sense to wonder how many he could win.

On the other hand, if Isaac never gets it together, the Pacers are effectively dumping Hield here. That’s fine too. Again, the Pacers could walk away from the 2023 draft with their new franchise player. Hield, as an elite sharpshooter, only stands in the way of that happening. 

Are the Magic ready to add such a player?
