Phoenix Suns Receive: G Markelle Fultz, G/F Gary Harris
Orlando Magic Receive: G Chris Paul, 2024 First-Round Pick (Swap – PHO)
Part of what impedes linear progress in the NBA is its lottery system. Whether you like it or not, teams have an incentive to lose.
We’re not here to debate the efficacy of that system. We’ll simply say this: it’s designed to give the NBA’s worst teams an avenue towards improvement.
It’s merely an unintended consequence that teams in the middle of the standings sometimes see a benefit in reaching the bottom.
After all, it’s significantly easier than reaching the top. Moreover, mining the NBA draft for elite talent is a reasonable way to get back to the top. All told, each team is entitled to decide what they’re prioritizing in a given season.
