Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
The Hornets have short and long-term motivations in this deal.
In the short term, it could actually make them better in 2022-23. Realistically, Bobby Portis would be this team’s starting center from day one. He’d be an interesting fit – Portis would improve their defense, and his ability to space the floor could do wonders for LaMelo Ball.
Meanwhile, Allen would potentially start as well. He could be a great compliment to Ball as an off-ball specialist who plays rugged defense. Still, the long-term incentives here are likely even more important to the Hornets.
Specifically, they get off of Rozier’s deal. It runs for the next four seasons. Granted, so does Portis’, but at roughly half the price.
