Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
This deal lands the Jazz two first-round picks. It’s hard to imagine what else would matter to them.
After all, the Jazz are rebuilding. In all likelihood, they’ll be looking to bottom out ahead of a much-anticipated 2023 draft. They might as well land first-round picks at all costs in the process.
It just so happens that these picks are especially valuable. After all, the Lakers are old. By 2027, James is likely to have retired – and he’ll surely be gone by 2029.
All the Jazz need is for Anthony Davis to leave, and the Lakers will surely need a rebuilding period at some point.

The Jazz would just need to hope the timing was right. Of course, they don’t need to use thee picks to draft players, either. If their rebuild finds itself ahead of schedule, they could trade them in for win-now veterans in a few years.
In that event, they’ll likely create some smoke of their own – weather there’s fire behind it or not.
