Why The Oklahoma City Thunder Do The Deal
The main question here pertains to Shi Gilgeous-Alexander’s level of patience.
In all likelihood, the Thunder will be among the league’s worst teams in 2022-23. If that wasn’t already the case, Chet Holmgren’s season-ending injury makes it so.
Of course, that means they’ll likely nab another top pick in the draft. On the other hand, that doesn’t assure them short-term success either.
Suppose they draft Victor Wembenyama: can he co-exist with Holmgren? On the other hand, imagine they draft Scoot Henderson: surely, one of Gilgeous-Alexander or Josh Giddey would have to go.
Moreover, young players take time to win. At 24, Gilgeous-Alexander has time to wait – but how much? If the Thunder moved him now, it might be because he’s grown impatient, or, they may simply prefer to build a core group on the same timeline.
