Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

The problem with being a jack of all trades is that sometimes, it renders you a master of none.

Josh Richardson is an example of that principle. He’s an adequate three-point shooter, but not a strong one. He’s a solid defender, but not an elite one. Finally, he offers a little bit of playmaking – but not too much.

Richardson is a helpful rotational player on a contender. With that said, he’s probably not good enough to command a first-round pick, either. If the Spurs are willing to accept that fact, this is a good return for a veteran they won’t be using.

In all likelihood, they won’t use Powell, either. He’s here to make the money work for what, in spirit, is a Green-for-Richardson swap. The Spurs may sit him for the year.

By contrast, Green should be a fixture in their rotation next season. He’s a hyperactive, athletic wing who’s already proven to be a stout defender in this league. If his three-point shot comes around, he’ll be a valuable player for a long time.

Should the Mavericks really part with him to receive Richardson?
