Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
We’ve basically already explained why the Mavericks do this deal. They’re landing a co-star for Luka Doncic.
Of course, any old co-star won’t do. The ideal partner for Doncic would be an elite floor-spacer who’s also capable of generating offense from scratch. After all, no matter who the Mavericks bring on board, we can assume that Doncic will continue to be the focal point of their offense.
VanVleet qualifies. That’s not to say there are no issues here. The Mavericks had a quality defense last season, but with the addition of VanVleet and Christian Wood, they’d be bringing in two players who are known to struggle on that end. All told, that may reduce their stopping power.
It feels like a worthwhile trade-off. This offense would likely be dominant. VanVleet would more than make up for the loss of Jalen Brunson.

Moreover, his offensive abilities would allow the Mavericks to sit Wood in favor of JaVale McGee or Maxi Kleber without compromising their firepower too significantly.
That sounds like a partnership that could be built to last.
