Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
Cutting ties with VanVleet won’t be easy. He was the Raptors’ point guard when they won the 2018-19 NBA title. As an undrafted All-Star, he’s a fan favorite.
He also may not fit with this team’s long-term vision. Last season, the Raptors looked to run long, playmaking wings at as many positions as possible. As an undersized point guard, VanVleet didn’t fit the bill. Moving him could allow them to explore the potential of 6’9 floor general Dalano Banton.
Of course, that’s not the main reason they’re interested here. That would be the Mavericks’ first-round picks in 2025 and 2027. Granted, those selections are unlikely to convey in the lottery. Still, they are valuable assets the Raptors could use in a trade within the next couple of years.
Josh Green is a nice addition too. He’s an energetic young wing who plays great defense – if his three-pointer starts dropping, he’ll be a good player in this league.

Meanwhile, Bertans is a salary matcher here more than anything, but adding his front-court spacing could facilitate improvement from Barnes.
Is VanVleet worth enough to the Mavericks to give all of that up?
