Why The New Orleans Pelicans Do The Deal
The Pelicans do the deal to land Kevin Durant. That much is obvious. With that said, there are other benefits here too.
Specifically, Zion Williamson’s tenure with the organization has been marred by controversy. It feels like speculation about his departure began from the moment he put on the uniform. If the Pelicans made this deal, he could, if nothing else, never claim they weren’t trying to win.
On a related, and more important note: they could win. As in, the 2022-23 NBA championship.
With CJ McCollum on the roster, the Pelicans already project to have some of the most firepower in the league with Willamson and Ingram. Swap Ingram for Durant, and they should lead the NBA in scoring comfortably.

Parting wth Ingram would sting. He’s closer to Williamson’s age, and therefore the two make for a more sensible pairing if the Pelicans are planning for the future. At the same time, if they’re landing Kevin Durant, they’d have to consider moving him:
