Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
We’ll note that this deal can’t transpire until after January 15. That’s because both Beal and Towns got raises this summer. Realistically, that doesn’t suit any of these teams as well as it suits the Timberwolves.
Clearly, they’ve got to see this experiment through. They just sacrificed a lot to land Gobert. Obviously, they think he can pair well with Towns. On the other hand, what if they’re wrong?
After all, Gobert was brought in to make up for Towns’ shortcomings on defense. That makes enough sense on the surface, but now, Towns will have to defend the 4.
It’s possible that he’ll struggle more in his new position – it’s a perimeter-oriented position, and Towns doesn’t have the quickest feet in the league. Moreover, the Wolves are likely to struggle in transition with such a slow frontcourt pairing.

All of which may be much ado about nothing. The talent here is undeniable, and if it looks decent by midseason, the Wolves wouldn’t even consider this course of action. With that said, if it’s shaky looking, a Gobert/Anthony Edwards/Bradley Beal trio could still make for a contending squad.
It would certainly give the Timberwolves a more modern look, at least.
