Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
When a rebuilding team trades a quality player for a first-round pick, it has a two-pronged effect.
First, there’s an obvious effect – they get a first-round pick. In this instance, the Spurs get Denver’s 2023 selection. In all likelihood, it will land well outside the lottery. Still, any opportunity for a rebuilding club to nab a draft day steal is an opportunity worth taking.
With that said, the second effect is perhaps more significant. The team maximizes its own lottery odds. Jakob Poeltl is quite good, and that’s a problem for the Spurs.
After all, if having an elite rim protector who can survive in space results in them winning 28 games instead of 23 this year, they’ve wasted their season. Suddenly, they’d be in a position where their odds of landing within the top 3 were far too slim.

In a draft headlined by Victor Wembenyama and Scoot Henderson, the Spurs shouldn’t take half-measures with their tank job. It’s imperative that they find Poeltl a new home before long.
