Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
Some Raptors fans will hate this deal. Understandably so. They’re arguably giving up the two best players in the package.
At the same time, that’s arguable. Kristaps Porzingis’ 2021-22 season was marred by injury. When healthy, he’s a stretch big man who defends the rim at an elite level. There’s a reason this man was once dubbed “the unicorn”.
That skillset happens to make him precisely what the Raptors need at the 5 spot. Porzingis, in theory, could step into their starting lineup without compromising their spacing. Furthermore, the gains they’d make in terms of interior defense should be worth the tradeoff. They’ll simply bump Siakam and Scottie Barnes down a position each.
Good luck to opponents trying to score on a Porzingis, Siakam, Barnes front court. Of course, the Raptors will miss VanVleet. Without a starting caliber point guard, they may even take a step back in 2022-23 following this deal.

Still, once they’re eventually able to replace him, this deal could leave them with a more balanced roster.
It also leaves them with an extra unprotected first-round pick. That’s compensation for trading two starters for one here. Should the Wizards really be parting with a future asset?
