Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Of course, there’s a further dilemma for the Nets when it comes to staying competitive in the wake of a Durant trade. Realistically, they won’t be able to land a package for Durant that will come close to replacing the competitive edge that having Durant gives them in the first place.
Still, if the Nets prefer to avoid outright tanking, that’s understandable. Sure, they could rebuild this roster by drafting wisely in the seasons where they merely owe the Rockets a swap, but there’s no denying that owing every other pick to them outright is an impediment.
This deal aims to split the difference. It won’t keep the Nets as competitive as Durant will, but it doesn’t require them to tank either.
In fact, Mikal Bridges feels like the perfect player to complement Simmons. Moreover, the two should make for one of the best defensive duos in the NBA. Bearing in mind that Kyrie Irving is still on this roster, the Nets should have plenty of pieces to keep them, if nothing else, in the playoff hunt.

Brooklyn doesn’t do this deal unless Durant’s trade request resurfaces. If it does, they’ll have to survey the league’s landscape at the time, but don’t be surprised if this is the best offer they can find. Should the Suns offer it?
