Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
After the 2021-22 postseason, the Wolves may be on the hunt for a new point guard anyway. D’Angelo Russell turned in a poor performance as they failed to advance past the first round.
Russell is talented – nobody is here to deny that. On the other hand, he’s an inconsistent floor spacer. Russell operates best with the ball in his hands. For the Timberwolves, that’s an issue.
After all, the Wolves have Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns to feed. Edwards is also best utilized as an on-ball player, and he’s clearly more important to this franchise than Russell. Towns has tremendous off-ball value, but the Wolves still need to run possessions through him.
Chris Paul will make sure they do. Moreover, at 37, he may be ready to transition into the exact role the Wolves would be looking for him to fill. He can still carry this offense for spurts, but he’d primarily be functioning as a floor spacer, game manager, and point-of-attack defender.
