Of all the positions an NBA team can find themselves in, fringe contention may be the most complicated one. Certainly, it’s fraught with the most decision-making. 

Rebuilding teams have a reasonably simple plan to execute: acquire young players and draft picks until they start to win games. Until that starts happening, the pressure around those teams is relatively low. 

Bonafide, clear-cut contenders are also well-advised to stand pat. If you just made the Finals or even the Conference Finals, what reason do you have to make sweeping changes? 

On the other hand, fringe contenders have to make decisions.
