Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
The Knicks are unquestionably taking a loss here. In reality, all they’re doing here is accepting their fate before that loss increases in size.
As it stands, it’s a minimal one. The Knicks acquired Reddish at the cost of, ironically, a first-round pick from the Hornets via the Hawks. With that said, the pick is heavily protected. It’s entirely possible that it eventually conveys in the form of two second-round selections.
In that event, dealing two second-round picks for Kelly Oubre Jr. is a fine decision. The Knicks could surely stand to improve their wing depth. Oubre Jr. gives them an energetic wing who provides value on defence, and occasionally in terms of floor-spacing as well.
Furthermore, he’s on an expiring contract. That should be appealing to the Knicks. If he gives them a strong 2022-23 season, they can retain him. Otherwise, they’re clearing cap space, and avoiding a decision around extending Reddish.
