Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
To answer the previous question: absolutely. Jordan Clarkson fills a need for this Raptors team.
As constructed, their guard depth is a bit shaky. Fred VanVleet is an outstanding talent – he’ll continue to be this team’s lead guard. Moreover, his backcourt mate Gary Trent Jr. won’t be usurped either. Clarkson is a more gifted shot maker, but Trent Jr. is a more efficient shooter and a superior defender.
After those two, it’s hard to identify the next best guard on this roster. As constructed, it’s probably Malachi Flynn by default. For a Raptors team with competitive ambitions, that’s a problem.
It happens to be one Clarkson would solve. After all, he was the 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year. Clarkson is well accustomed to being a spark plug off the bench, so he won’t be vying for either of the Raptors’ starting guard roles.
