Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal
By contrast, this deal doesn’t do much for Miami in 2022-23. Realistically, it makes them a worse team.
For the Heat, this trade is all about the future.
We saw Miami linked to almost every available star this summer. Rumors about their interest in both Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell were rampant. Unfortunately for them, without including Bam Adebayo, they didn’t have much to offer in exchange for either.
Following this trade, the Heat would be in a better position to land marquee talent. This draft-poor organization will suddenly have three extra first-round picks at its disposal. Moreover, they’re moving Kyle Lowry’s long-term contract for Eric Gordon’s expiring deal.
There is definitely a risk for Miami in choosing this route. Realistically, they’d be hoping for a brief retooling process that saw them moving back to contention for the 2023-24 season – and hoping Jimmy Butler can extend his prime an extra year.
