Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
The Mavericks will miss both of their outgoing players here. On the one hand, this team acquired Christian Wood from the Houston Rockets this summer, so from a rotational perspective, they can spare either.
With that said, they may struggle defensively in their absences. After all, Wood is a dynamic offensive big, but he’s not known for his point-preventing prowess. Can the Mavericks, in light of their new big man, withstand the loss of two quality defenders?
If this deal is on the table, they’ll have to try. Furthermore, Ball is an excellent point-of-attack defender – the Mavericks would be boosting their perimeter defense at the expense of the interior here. Still, it’s Ball’s fit alongside Doncic on the offensive end that really motivates them to get this deal done.
Simply put, it’s perfect on paper. Ball is an elite floor-spacer. That suits the ball-dominant Doncic nicely. Ball also struggles to create offense in half-court sets, but it shouldn’t be an issue given Doncic’s prodigious talent in that area.

Finally, Ball’s fantastic floor vision does allow him to make plays in transition, giving the Mavericks another player with at least some ability to produce offense from scratch.
That sounds like too perfect of a fit for this organization to pass up on.
