Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal 

For Dallas, this deal is about scarcity as much as anything else. 

After all, the Mavericks traded for Christian Wood this summer already. Arguably, he’s the closest thing Doncic has to a co-star in 2022-23.

It’s entirely possible that the Mavericks will give him more run at the 4 than the 5, but they’ll want to experiment with looks that space the floor by playing him at center. 

Meanwhile, Dallas also committed a solid chunk of change to JaVale McGee this summer as well. Between those two and Maxi Kleber, the Mavericks are flush with players who need minutes at the 5.

That makes Powell expendable. Meanwhile, the Mavericks could use another 3-and-D wing. As it stands, only Doran Finney-Smith and Reggie Bullock fit that description. In other words, this deal is aimed at improving the Mavericks’ floor balance.
