Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal

Landing OG Anunoby feels like a perfect decision for the New York Knicks. He helps their present and future bottom line at the same time.

In the present, Anunoby’s 3-and-D skillset should make any team better. Moreover, this squad is not so flush with talent that they can’t afford to offer Anunoby an expanded role in 2022-23. If he’s truly unhappy without the ball in his hands in Toronto, the Knicks would give him the opportunity to justify those feelings to the world.

At the same time, this trade benefits their future too. After all, Anunoby is only 25, and he happens to be exactly the type of player that contending teams always have on their roster.

That’s pivotal for a Knicks team that’s hoping to appeal to stars. If they do miss out on Mitchell this summer, they’ll still have more than enough draft capital to trade for another star down the line.

Having Anunoby on the roster puts the Knicks in a position where that star might actually be happy to join the team.
