Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
Let’s be clear – the Toronto Raptors don’t have to do this deal. There is no major impetus on them to move Gary Trent Jr.
In fact, Trent Jr. is a valuable player. He’s a 3-and-D guard who can survive minutes at the small forward position in small doses as well. At 23, the Raptors could see him as part of their long-term core.
On the other hand, two first-round picks are two first-round picks. Sure, the protections are substantial, but realistically, both of these selections are likely to eventually convey.
After all, the Pistons are on an upward trajectory. In all likelihood, their pick will convey in 2025 or 2026, and if it doesn’t convey by 2027, something has gone seriously wrong in Motor City.

Meanwhile, the Wizards’ future is a little less clear. Still, with Bradley Beal on long-term money and seemingly invested in the team, they’re likely to put together a good season between now and 2026. The Raptors, in all likelihood, are trading Trent Jr for two first-round picks here, and that’s just straight-up good value.
