It’s worth noting that, in reality, it looks like the Toronto Raptors are getting back more than they actually are here. 

After all, unprotected first-round picks. Those are the hottest commodities on the NBA trade market. As good as Trent Jr. is, he wouldn’t command two on his own on the open market. 

With that said, these are not unprotected first-round picks. They each have a complex series of rolling protections. Let’s elaborate. 

The Pistons pick is protected from 1-18 in the next draft, 1-13 in the 2025 draft, 1-11 in 2026, and 1-9 in 2027. Meanwhile, the Wizards’ pick is protected from 1-14 next year, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025, and 1-8 in 2026. That’s a mouthful.
