Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
The Charlotte Hornets already suffered a tremendous setback this summer. Miles Bridges’ pending domestic abuse charges don’t bode well for his NBA future, or his team’s 2022-23 season.
For that reason, the Hornets may be primed to take a step backward next season. That doesn’t mean they have to. This is a trade that could help them avoid that fate.
After all, the Hornets were always expected to pursue a big man this summer. Some may argue that they already landed one in incoming rookie Mark Williams. With that said, if the Hornets want to improve on their 2021-22 performance, leaning on a rookie doesn’t sound like a smart way to do so.
By contrast, the veteran Clint Capela ought to be a perfect fit for this group. He’s an effective lob catcher in pick-and-roll actions and a solid, reliable drop coverage rim protector to boot.

Capela’s a low-usage player, but the Hornets don’t need much more: After all, LaMelo Ball ought to require enough usage for two players combined anyway.
