Patrick Beverley’s Bold Lakers Prediction Way Before Trade

Back in May when the NBA Playoffs were just reaching the Conference Finals, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Patrick Beverley was having a sit-down conversation with Stephen A. Smith. Beverley’s Timberwolves had defeated the LA Clippers a few weeks prior in the NBA Play-In Tournament, earning a spot in the playoff field as the No. 7 seed.

That matched them up with the Memphis Grizzlies in what turned out to be one of the most exciting series of the postseason. The Grizzlies won in six games, but the Timberwolves gave them all they could handle. Had they closed out some games better, Minnesota could have easily advanced to the second round.

Since that time, Beverley has moved teams twice. It is the second consecutive offseason that he was traded multiple times, as he was acquired from the Grizzlies by the Timberwolves after the Clippers sent him to Memphis. This offseason, he was acquired by the Utah Jazz, who are rebuilding, from the Timberwolves as part of the Rudy Gobert blockbuster deal before being on the move again.

This week, Beverley was sent back to Los Angeles, this time to play with the Lakers. That interview from back in May has been making the rounds on social media because one of the topics that were discussed was the Los Angeles Lakers.

Beverley made some bold claims, saying if he were a free agent and he went to the Lakers, they would be in the Western Conference Finals. He wasn’t a free agent, but he still ended up with the franchise. Beverley will now have a chance to make that bold prediction come to fruition this season.

That is certainly a bold claim to make because the Lakers were the biggest disappointments in the NBA last season. They went 33-49, not even qualifying for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, as they were surpassed by the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.

Having a player willing to hold teammates accountable will certainly help and Patrick Beverley is more than willing to do that. But, the biggest obstacle that Los Angeles will have to overcome is health. If LeBron James and Anthony Davis miss over 60 games combined again, it will be another long season for the Lakers.
