NBA Scout Sees Mike Conley As Ideal Lakers Fit

The Los Angeles Lakers are on the hunt for any player that can help upgrade their roster. They fell woefully short of expectations during the 2021-22 season and need a shake-up to help get things back on track. Figuring out how to acquire those upgrades, however, is easier said than done.

Rob Pelinka exhausted most of his tradable assets last offseason when he acquired Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards. Now, to move on from him, the Lakers are being asked by other teams to attach even more assets in the form of draft capital.

Teams have reportedly asked the Lakers, not for one, but two future first-round picks to take on Westbrook and his expiring contract worth $44 million. Los Angeles has engaged a few teams in trade talks, but nothing has gained too much traction.

One team that the Lakers should try and work out a deal with is the Utah Jazz. They look to be heading toward a rebuild after trading away Royce O’Neale and Rudy Gobert. Donovan Mitchell is still on the roster, for now, but could be on the move himself in the coming weeks.

With winning this upcoming season not looking like a priority for the Jazz, as they prioritized draft capital in the return trade packages, multiple veterans could be on the move. Point guard Mike Conley Jr. is among them and he is someone that an NBA scout believes would be a perfect fit for the purple and gold.

“I like Mike Conley a lot for the Lakers. He was rough in the playoffs, but I think that’s clouded people from remembering how efficient he was in the regular season. He brings another reliable scorer out of ball screens, handoffs, and some off-ball actions. … What I like best is that he converts catch-and-shoot jumpers at a really high clip and can attack well out of those situations. When you add it all up, that’s a really clean fit with LeBron James, and that should be the top priority.”

While Conley isn’t the same player he was when leading the Grit and Grind Memphis Grizzlies, he is still more than serviceable. He has lost a step or two but would represent a sizable upgrade on the defensive end from Westbrook. On offense, he is a much better fit skill set-wise given his ability to knock down 3-pointers.

For his career, Conley has connected on 38.2 percent of his attempts and in the last two seasons he has knocked down 41 percent. As pointed out by the scout, Conley is an excellent catch-and-shoot player from the perimeter, something he would do plenty of with the Lakers.
