The Utah Jazz made a trade on Wednesday night, but it was not the NBA blockbuster that people are waiting for. Instead, they traded one of their veterans, sending Patrick Beverley to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson.

If their intentions weren’t already clear about what they are seeking in a trade for Donovan Mitchell, that trade is yet another example of it. Utah is looking to get younger. While that trade didn’t include any draft capital, that is also a major part of what they are looking for in return for Mitchell.

With a Kevin Durant trade now off the table, as he and the Brooklyn Nets have decided to move forward with their partnership, all of the focus will shift to Mitchell and the Jazz. Any team that was pursuing Durant in hopes of landing an All-Star can now try their hand at landing Mitchell.

Just like when any superstar could be on the move, Mitchell does have a preference on where he would like to be dealt. But, unlike Durant, no request has been made by Mitchell to be traded this offseason. Tony Jones of The Athletic shared the most recent updates surrounding the trade talks.

Donovan Mitchell hasn’t asked for a trade from the Jazz, according to sources. But, if he were to be traded, sources say, his preferred destination would be one of three places: the New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets, or the Miami Heat.

Out of those three destinations, the New York Knicks are the most realistic and would require the least amount of hoops to jump through. They have up to eight draft picks they can trade and a bevy of young players in RJ Barrett, Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley, Cam Reddish and Deuce McBride.

The Brooklyn Nets cannot make a trade for Mitchell unless Ben Simmons is part of the deal. Teams are allowed two Designated Rookies on a roster, but only one can be traded for. Simmons carries that tag, so unless he is sent to the Jazz or another team in the deal, Brooklyn is not allowed to acquire Mitchell.

The Miami Heat also have a Designated Player in Bam Adebayo, but he was drafted by the team, not acquired in a trade. Alas, Miami cannot come close to the asking price that Danny Ainge has set as Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson would be the player package, possibly with Max Strus also involved. But, they are lacking in draft capital to make a serious offer.
