Trade talks have dominated NBA headlines the last few weeks. With teams focused on trying to acquire big named players, things have come to a screeching halt in free agency. Veterans are waiting to see which players end up where before deciding on who to sign with for the 2022-23 season.
What gets lost sometimes in these trade negotiations is what the player wants. While Kevin Durant has made his intentions clear when it comes to his situation with the Brooklyn Nets, the same cannot be said for Donovan Mitchell and the Utah Jazz.
Mitchell hasn’t said much about his situation despite his name being involved in rumors for weeks. His hometown New York Knicks have been the most commonly mentioned team for him, with talks restarting with them over the weekend.
Throughout the process, some reports have surfaced about what sources believe Mitchell is feeling. He isn’t long for Utah has been the most prevalent one, as he will seek to leave at the first chance he has.
Mitchell has not requested a trade and it doesn’t sound like one is coming any time soon. In fact, according to Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic, Mitchell is content with whatever happens.
“Utah has set a high price threshold for Mitchell, who so far is believed to be comfortable with either outcome of staying with the Jazz or being traded elsewhere, sources said.”
Mitchell is handling these trade rumors very well. Alas, it is hard to imagine he would be content staying with the Jazz after they traded two key rotation players this offseason in Royce O’Neale and Rudy Gobert. It is hard to imagine them contending with the roster that they have and a rookie head coach as Quin Snyder stepped down and was replaced by Will Hardy.
However, the issues that he had with Gobert were well documented. With him now out of town, Mitchell could very well be content to stay and have the roster built around him with an eye toward the future.
