Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
The Celtics don’t do this deal unless Jaylen Brown wants out. Otherwise, they’d be well-advised to keep their Finalist core intact.
Let’s assume he does. In that event, the Celtics would have to lower their standard. In that context, they’re getting a solid return here.
Herro is not as good of a player as Brown, but he still has star potential. Adding him to a young core featuring Jayson Tatum, Robert Williams III, and Grant Williams gives them a bright future while keeping them competitive in the present.
Speaking of the future, this deal gives the Celtics a little draft capital as well. Two first-round picks and a swap is a significant return in addition to a player with Herro’s potential.

Lowry, of course, is here to match contracts. Still, he could be useful in 2022-23. If the Celtics are backed into a corner with Brown, this is a solid means to fight their way out of it.
